Background of the Study
Cancer and its treatments often lead to significant nutritional challenges for patients, including weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, and malnutrition. Nutritional status plays a key role in the overall health of cancer patients, affecting their ability to tolerate treatments and recover. Oncology nurses are uniquely positioned to influence the nutritional outcomes of cancer patients, as they are involved in direct patient care, education, and support. Oncology nurse-led interventions, such as dietary counseling, symptom management, and nutritional assessments, can significantly improve the nutritional status of patients undergoing cancer treatment.
At National Hospital, Abuja, oncology nurses play a central role in the management of cancer patients, particularly in terms of symptom control and supportive care. Despite the importance of nutrition in cancer care, there is a limited focus on nurse-led interventions aimed at improving nutritional status in Nigerian hospitals. This study will explore how oncology nurses at National Hospital, Abuja, implement nutritional interventions and assess their effectiveness in improving the nutritional status of cancer patients.
The research will focus on the types of interventions provided by oncology nurses, including dietary recommendations, monitoring of nutritional intake, and support for managing side effects that impact nutrition, such as nausea and taste alterations. By evaluating the impact of these interventions on the nutritional outcomes of cancer patients, this study aims to provide evidence for the effectiveness of nurse-led nutritional care in improving the overall well-being and treatment outcomes for cancer patients.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Malnutrition is a common issue among cancer patients, exacerbated by the side effects of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Oncology nurses are at the forefront of providing supportive care to cancer patients, but their role in addressing the nutritional challenges of these patients has not been fully explored in Nigerian hospitals. At National Hospital, Abuja, there is a need for effective nurse-led interventions to address the nutritional needs of cancer patients, which are critical for improving their overall health and ability to withstand treatment.
The lack of systematic nurse-led interventions in nutritional care may contribute to poor nutritional outcomes in cancer patients, leading to weakened immune systems, delayed recovery, and increased susceptibility to treatment complications. This study seeks to examine the effect of oncology nurse-led interventions on the nutritional status of cancer patients at National Hospital, Abuja. By identifying the specific interventions that improve nutritional outcomes, the study aims to provide insights into how oncology nurses can enhance the quality of life and treatment outcomes for cancer patients.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of oncology nurse-led interventions on the nutritional status of cancer patients at National Hospital, Abuja.
2. To identify the types of nurse-led interventions that have the most significant effect on improving nutritional status in cancer patients.
3. To evaluate the relationship between improved nutritional status and overall patient outcomes in cancer treatment.
Research Questions
1. What is the impact of oncology nurse-led interventions on the nutritional status of cancer patients at National Hospital, Abuja?
2. Which nurse-led interventions are most effective in improving the nutritional status of cancer patients?
3. How does improved nutritional status influence patient outcomes in cancer treatment?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Oncology nurse-led interventions do not significantly affect the nutritional status of cancer patients at National Hospital, Abuja.
2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between improved nutritional status and overall cancer treatment outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on cancer patients at National Hospital, Abuja, and examine the role of oncology nurse-led interventions in improving their nutritional status. Limitations may include variability in patient conditions and nursing practices.
Definitions of Terms
• Oncology Nurse-Led Interventions: Interventions provided by oncology nurses that aim to improve the nutritional status of cancer patients, including dietary counseling, monitoring, and management of symptoms that affect nutrition.
• Nutritional Status: The health and well-being of a cancer patient as influenced by their nutrition, including factors like weight, energy levels, and the ability to tolerate treatments.
• Cancer Patients: Individuals diagnosed with cancer, undergoing treatment including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
